Dear Parents and Carers,
Science Week
This week has been Science Week in school when we encourage the children to develop their skills of scientific enquiry and also learn about careers and opportunities within Science.
The theme of the week was ‘Growth’ and we began in Tuesday’s assembly with a ‘Guess the Baby’ competition where children were challenged to spot the staff members from their baby photos. As well as being fun, this helped the children appreciate how we all grow and develop. Our Reception children were particularly good at matching the babies to the staff member!
Our hatching chicks have also been growing very well and are leaving us today. It was a lovely sight to see the children observe how they changed and handle them so gently - they will be missed!
We have had a number of parents visiting classes this week to talk about their careers in Science. The children have been really fascinated with these talks which have stimulated some excellent questions. A huge thank you to the parents who gave their time to do this for us.
We have also had two child-led Science based assemblies this week. On Thursday our School Council spoke to the whole school about the importance of a healthy diet. Today, our Science Ambassadors gave a presentation about our Science curriculum and each class representative showcased the learning in their year group. Parents can view what their child is learning in Science on the class pages of the school website.
And finally, the Eco-Warriors held a cake sale yesterday in aid of the World Wide Fund for Nature. They have raised over £160 which they hope to use to adopt a number of endangered animals for the classes.
Thank you, Mrs Sheridan, our Science lead, for organising Science Week!
Y6 Visit to the Globe Theatre
On Wednesday this week, both of our Y6 classes visited the Globe Theatre as part of their English study of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. They took part in a drama workshop and toured the theatre itself. Ciaran said, ”I found it really interesting to see how the Elizabethan theatre was so different to today’s, especially the lack of roof.” Amelia said, “I really enjoyed learning how the theatre was built and decorated.”
Sports Update from Mr Sagar
On Tuesday, St Elizabeth's Hockey team competed against the Borough Primary Schools at Barnes Hockey Club. On a sweltering day, they gave it their all in every game. We finished top of our group and played The Vineyard School in the semi-final. After a tight opening start to the game, St Elizabeth’s won 8-3.
In the final we played Collis School. The final was a really close match, and after conceding an early goal we were always chasing the game, which eventually finished 3-2 to Collis. The children played really well and despite the heat, chased every ball and pass, very much deserving their runners-up medals. Well done!
National School Sports Week
Next week is National School Sports Week, and to celebrate this we have arranged our KS1 Sports Day on Tuesday morning. The sports day takes place on the astro-turf and involves a number of activity circuits and some competitive running races. Parents and carers are welcome to watch their child/children from outside the astro pitch. The sports day begins at 9:30am and will finish at approximately 11:00am.
On Thursday 22nd June, we will be celebrating the children's sporting achievements in assembly. The Sports Committee will lead assembly and we would like to invite children to bring in medals, trophies and certificates and share stories of their favourite sports.
