Art and Design
Art and Design is a highly valued subject at St Elizabeth's. Through Art and Design, children develop a range of intellectual and practical skills. Our curriculum provides children with regular opportunities to think imaginatively and creatively, develop their problem-solving and language skills and work collaboratively with others. The curriculum provides opportunity to develop children’s resilience, well-being and confidence, which can have a positive impact beyond the Art and Design curriculum.
Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design.
Exposure to a diverse range of artists and craft makers, develops children’s understanding of how art and artists contribute to the cultural heritage of a locality or time period.
Our curriculum covers five key elements of Art and Design:
- Making skills
- Generating ideas
- Formal elements
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating
Drawing is a key skill which runs throughout all activities. Children develop their skills both in observation and perception, and in communicating ideas visually.
Sketchbooks are used from Y2 to Y6 to collect, generate, record, revisit and improve ideas.
As children progress they improve their mastery of Art and Design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials: for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay and digital technology.
Our Y6 children are invited to act as Art Ambassadors, a role which promotes participation in art activities throughout the school.
Enrichment activities such as gallery visits, visiting artists and Arts Week are important elements of the Art and Design Curriculum. Through these, children learn about our artistic heritage and raise aspirations for careers in the creative arts.
